FAQ Before your appointment

What is a prenatal massage?

Prenatal massages are adapted for the anatomical changes you go through during pregnancy. In a traditional massage, you might spend half the time lying face-down on your stomach (which is not possible with a baby belly) and half the time facing up (a position that puts pressure on a major blood vessel that can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous).

But as your shape and posture changes, a trained massage therapist will make accommodations with special cushioning systems or holes that allow you to lie face down safely, while providing room for your growing belly and breasts. Or you might lie on your side with the support of pillows and cushions.

Is it safe to get a massage while pregnant?

Of course, Prenatal massages are generally considered safe after the first trimester, as long as you get the green light from your practitioner and you let your massage therapist know you’re pregnant. You might want to avoid massage before then because it can make you dizzy or nauseous — and you probably don’t want to make your morning sickness worse.

Who should avoid massage during pregnancy?

There is a bit of research on the safety of massage for pregnant people. Talk to your doctor about your risk. There are some conditions of pregnancy when you shouldn’t use massage.

As a result, your doctor might advise against getting a massage if you have:

  • a risk of preterm labor
  • preeclampsia
    high blood pressure
  • blood clots or a clotting disorder
  • problems with your placenta, such as placenta previa
  • gestational diabetes
What are the benefits of prenatal massage?

Research shows that massage can reduce stress hormones in your body and relax and loosen your muscles. It can also increase blood flow, which is so important when you’re pregnant, and keep your lymphatic system working at peak efficiency. It also helps to reconnect your mind with your body.

During pregnancy, regular prenatal massages may not only help you relax, but may also relieve:

  • Insomnia
  • Joint pain
  • Neck and back pain
  • Leg cramping
  • Sciatica
  • Swelling in your hands and feet (as long as that swelling isn’t a result of preeclampsia)
  • Headaches and sinus congestion
Is it safe to get a chemical peel while pregnant?

The skin is super sensitive and easily irritated during pregnancy, so it is best if you stay away from abrasive facials and chemical peels when pregnant.

Are facial masks safe during pregnancy?

It depends. There are plenty of chemicals that you should avoid when you’re pregnant, and some of them, like salicylic acid, beta hydroxy acid (BHA), alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), and retinoids are commonly found in beauty products like face mask sheets. We would gladly recommend safe and the best products for your skin!

Is it safe to have a facial while pregnant?

Yes! It is safe for all Mamas like you to get facials during pregnancy, as long as you’re just getting basic treatments, avoiding chemicals and electric currents. If you’re still concerned, make sure to schedule a consultation with one of our skin expert on which facials are best for you before booking a facial appointment.
